Never Underestimate Your Need For Home Safety And Security

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Do you feel like your family is as safe as they can be when they are at home? Have you taken as many precautions as you can to ensure that safety? Home can be a dangerous place for several reasons, but if you know you have taken the initiative and put in place certain safety measures, you will be able to sleep a lot easier at night and feel much better about leaving your home unattended. It is easy enough to achieve the most safety and security you can if you just take the time to think about it.

One of the number one safety concerns for every home should be fire. Fires don’t always happen during the night, but many times they do. You must have working smoke detectors through out your home to ensure every one will be awakened if there is smoke and fire. If the alarms don’t work, they are useless. The batteries must be checked on a regular basis and changed when needed. Even when you are alerted to a fire in the night or any other time, by the time you are up, it might be too late to reach a regular escape route. Always have at least one working fire extinguisher in the home as well.

If any doors are blocked by fire, it is important that every upstairs room has an escape ladder. Even kids need to be taught how to put an escape ladder in place in the open window and how to climb down to safety. Of course, this will be impossible for very small children, so it will be up to you to be able to get to them as quickly as possible in the event of a house fire. Just by supplying a safety ladder for every bedroom in the home, you could save lives that are precious to you.

Burglary and break ins are next on the list of the biggest threats to home safety. This means you need to have security measures in place too. Having a fire safe chest or lock box hidden in the home that only you can find and open is a great idea. It needs to be fireproof and waterproof as well. Not all parents like the idea of a gun in the house for protection, but many will keep a pistol or revolver in a locked wall pistol cabinet just in case they ever need it. It is vital that any gun in the home be kept where a child can never have access to it, even accidentally, and a locked wall pistol cabinet is the best choice.

It is not everyone that has had their home broken into. Other than fire, knowing there is an intruder in your home in the dead of night has to be just as frightening as a fire. Making sure you have a some kind of home security system in place and turned on each night or while you are away, can be enough to scare off an intruder when it alarms. Keep your most valuable possessions, your family and your home, as safe and secure as you are able to by implementing these particular measures.

Daybed Covers – Make The Most Out Of Your Daybed

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Daybed covers are typically fitted and can be made to make the bed look more like a small couch than a bed. The covers are made in an array of colors and materials and are usually quite decorative, but they are not made to sleep under but instead are made to be sat on. The covers are usually removed to reveal the blankets and sheets underneath.

Daybeds get their name because originally, they were used by housewives to sit on after working all day. In between taking care of their kids and cooking, they’d take a rest for a few moments to regain their energy.

They are usually the size of a standard twin sized bed. They have three sides made of wood or decorative iron works.

The front is left open and there is usually ample clearance for storage underneath. The mattress sits on top of the spring support eliminating the need for a foundation or box spring. They typically use standard sheets made for a twin bed. There are usually throw pillows laid across the back or special pillows made specifically for these types of beds.

You can often times buy daybed sets. The materials they are made of, as well as the colors they are made into, vary greatly. When buying them in a set, they may seem a bit expensive as they come with additional covers for the side, front, and top of the bed, but if you bought them individually, it’d be more expensive.

Well made quality varieties will cost a little more than those that are lower quality made of a lesser material. Keep this in mind when buying daybed covers.

Daybeds are used more often as decorations than to sleep on, and pairing the right daybed covers with the right bed frame can make a huge difference in a room.

Put The Whole World On Your Desk

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

So this past week was my husband’s birthday, I tell you what, I had run into a real situation. I couldn’t think of any good ideas and I wanted it to be special. My husband’s a really technical guy. It is all in relation to computer systems and gadgets that I will neither remember nor comprehend. And furthermore, if he truly needs it, he just buys it himself. I make an effort not to think about the amount of cash that goes towards this.

Then, I was downstairs attempting to create any kind of headway in tidying his office, when I realized that the answer had been staring me down. To explain this, allow me describe his office first. My husband’s office stands out as the dark, dank pit of everything is unholy. You can find piles of newspaper everywhere, stacks of books, file folders, paperclips, post-its, you name the office supply and it is certainly in there somewhere. And am I permitted to come in contact with any of the documents or instruction manuals? Oh, no! All of it is where it is for an exact reason, he would lose several hours of work and so on and so forth So I clean around them, delicately throwing away any litter that obviously does not comprise of notes on it (he just loves to use napkins for his brainwork).

All of this, I do think I can handle. So it is apparent that a man works here, okay. At the least, my cleaning skills cannot be held accountable for that! But the area is completely unornamented; other than if you count the amazing leather bound books sitting around, the mini sculpture on his desk, and european map poster on the back wall. Now, I am pretty positive, knowing my spouse, that the inspiration behind the statue on the desk and the poster on the wall, is that he desired to appear well-learned. Obviously, we could have enough money better than that cheap poster, however he would never spend the time which makes it happen.

So, clearly a gift to him is also a present to me! I searched high and low before I knew exactly what I sought after. To my surprise, I got the idea of getting him a globe. I by no means would have dreamed that this would be the solution, but the more often I thought about it, I realized a Replogle Globe could be a simple method to offer his place of work some greatly needed stylishness and charm. Spontaneously adding a vintage cartography globe to his office may well manifest that “old school” look that you often see in an old library in England or something. I found delightful old world globes, as well as desktop globes, and also floor standing globes from Replogle, which I’m sure will look amazingly elegant (Definitely thousands of times better, compared to that darn map poster on the wall!).

I ended up choosing an old world desktop globe and slipped it on his muddled desk while he was at a baseball game. What a surprise, ha! It was fairly tricky getting all his textbooks and manuscripts back exactly as they were, but we seemed to handle it okay. And boy, did he love “his” gift! (I sure do!)

The Many Different Types Of Water Filters

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Pollution in the air and in the water causes many people to be concerned about the quality of water that is running through their home. They are unsure on whether it is safe to drink, cook with, or even shower with. Many are turning to bottled water to drink and cook with, and others are using water filters to get rid of chemicals in their tap water. If you are considering installing a water filter system, you need to make sure you get the right one for your needs.

Having your water tested will help you decide what the best system is as it will tell you if there is a problem and what kind of problem. This will give you the information you need to choose the system that deals with the specific problems of your home water and correct them.

Sometimes water tastes funny and that is because of contaminants that may be in it that can make you sick. A filtering system is able to remove microbes, lead, radon, pesticides, and other chemicals that may find themselves in your water supply. They basically are able to purify your water, making it safer to drink.

Not all purification systems are the same, so after it has been determined what the problem is with your water, you’ll have the data on hand in choosing the right system for you. Research the best marks and what they do, choose one that is certified so you are guaranteed of its effectiveness.

There are two different systems for water purification. You have the POU, which is the point of use and that is centered around the faucet. You then have the POE which is the point of entry which is where the water comes into your home.

Generally there are three options for the point of use filters: distillers, reverse osmosis, and water pitchers. The distillers remove contaminants by boiling the water, which will remove many of the minerals found naturally in water and can change the taste. Reverse osmosis uses a membrane that filters water through with a pressure that pulls microbes and chemicals out of it. They will use a lot of water but are extremely effective. The most affordable are the pitchers, these have filters inside and when you fill them with your tap water it is filtered through, trapping chemicals and contaminants. This method also improves the taste of the water.

The POE filter options usually consist of water softeners, aerators, and adsorptive media or water filtration. The softeners change the hard water to soft by replacing the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. The aerators use jets of air to remove certain chemicals and contaminants, like radon and chemical components of gas. The adsorptive media or water filtration is often carbon based and are able to trap solids and liquids in the filter.

No matter why you want to look into water filters, choosing the right one for your home is necessary. Test your water beforehand so you get the one that will correct your specific problem and have the water tested annually to make sure your system is doing its job effectively. You deserve safe drinking and cooking water and a water purification system can give that to you.
