Psychotherapy And Music

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

As more research has been conducted on the role of music in Psychotherapy, a prevailing hypothesis has been validated. Performance, appreciation, and creation of music has proven to be invaluable in enhancing and solidifying the relationship between patients and their therapists.

While the goals of psychotherapy is focused on creating an encouraging and safe environment that allows the patient to identify and address issues and challenges in their life. Music therapy provides the opportunity for the individual to creatively visualize, identify, and address the non-verbal elements of the issue. This is accomplished through the use of composition, dance, and listening to music that forms the foundation upon which the therapist and patient can develop a common communication mode.

The diversity of patients that seek the assistance of a psychotherapy require flexibility and adaptability from the therapist who must be able to engender the safe and supportive environment that will allow the patient to discuss their abuse, trauma, physical, or cognitive challenges effectively.

Music has played an integral role in the lives of mankind throughout history. When a psychotherapist and music therapist work together to customize and design an effective therapeutic program, studies have shown a significant impact on the mental and emotional well being and growth of patients.

Sometimes, the benefits can be extremely surprising. A randomized study conducted in London, UK involved schizophrenics undergoing inpatient treatment for their disorder. This study, conducted by Doctor Michael J. Crawford and other colleagues found that after treatment using music therapy in addition to other forms of treatment, people suffering from Schizophrenia actually experienced improvements. They were assessed in terms of mental health, global functioning and satisfaction with the level of care they were receiving.

Music therapy can take many different forms. In some cases, patients and therapists may work together to create a piece of music by singing or playing instruments. In other cases, patients may have been encouraged to move to the music which can be very freeing to some individuals who may be dealing with physical disabilities. Singing can be a valuable tool in treating patients with dementia or other memory-related issues. It has been proven that singing uses different areas of the brain than speaking does. In some patients who may be dealing with a severe speech impediment such as a stutter, singing may be a more effective way for them to communicate for this very reason.

During studies of music on physiology it has been shown that blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration rate can be lowered through the use of music in teaching relaxation and bio-feedback techniques. Increasing range of motion and physical strength is more easily accomplished when the subconscious mind of the patient can focus on music rather than on the task at hand. In addition, the use of group musical activities has shown that individuals with difficulty interacting with peers are much more relaxed and able to interact and connect more effectively.

Although music therapy may not be of help to everyone, it has been proven that patients who suffer a range of conditions including acute psychosis, stroke, dementia and other challenges may be able to relate more quickly and gain more value from their therapy than those undergoing traditional forms of psychotherapy alone.

A New Way To Relax

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Camping trips are enjoyed by people looking to spend time outdoors, and experience nature. That’s what most people are looking for, at least. Some friends of ours kept telling us how much they hated camping trips, and how they enjoy working much more than go on a trip, but twice a year, they went on their camping trips. We never knew where they went, but most lasted for several days.

You might be wondering why, and frankly, so were we. They just shrugged their shoulders when we asked them why they continued going if they hated it so much. We also asked them if we could join them, on special occasions, and see if we can’t make it more fun for them. A simple “no” was all we got from them.

They had also bought this big tent, saying it was very important to have a good tent when going camping. I agreed, but when I told them it was fairly large and would probably be difficult to carry, they just laughed at me. I figured they must know what they are doing, with the large number of trips they’ve gone on.

It turns out they did know what they were doing, as I found out on the next night. They were supposed to leave on one of their camping trips, but I heard them making noise in the hallway. A quick look showed me they were going to the top of the building, instead of exiting it.

Following them led me to the roof, where they had their big tent all set up, a large collection of magazines, and a 8gb zune player connected to some speakers. This appeared to be their “camping” spot. I decided to let them know I was there, and told them how much I liked their player.

Their reaction had me laughing uncontrollably, and they soon joined me. They explained to me that this was “their” camping spot, and it was very relaxing. They finally decided to let us accompany them on their “trips” and now, from time to time, two big tents can be seen from the street, on top of our building.

Why The Smartest Kids Own A Sansa Shaker 1gb MP3 Player?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

My kid’s birthday was coming up, and once again I had no idea what to get her. Dolls were out of the question, as she was getting a little old for them, but I didn’t know what else to buy. Her mother was of no use, so I had to go out and look for a suitable present on my own, knowing that if she didn’t like it, it would be my fault, of course.

I entered all the shops I could find, one by one, from toy stores, to electronics stores. My finances were not great either, but I wanted a nice present for her. Just when I though everything was hopeless, and was going to buy a dollhouse, I saw something interesting, that wasn’t too expensive either.

The salesman explained everything I needed to know about the sansa shaker 1gb mp3 player and I bought it, hoping she would like it. Along the way, I started looking at it, and wondering if it actually works. I decided to try it out, to see if it wasn’t defective, of course. I had so much fun with it that I went back and bought another one, but this time, for myself.

I arrived in time for the birthday party, and handed her my gift, feeling very proud of my choice. Her reaction showed me I had made the right choice, as she loved it from the moment she saw it. After filling it with songs, and understanding how to use it, she started taking it everywhere with her. She wouldn’t even let me borrow it, telling me she needed it.

I revealed to my wife my player, and she called me crazy. She doesn’t know a thing about technology. Buying it has been one of the best decisions I’ve taken, and I’ve been using it ever since, even at work. There’s always time to listen to a song, no matter how busy I am.
