Buying Pet Supplies For The First Time

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The number of types of pet supplies is as unlimited as the different types of pets you can have. You should do research on what you need and why. Then talk to an associate at a pet store. If you already know why you need certain things, you can then make sure you are not talked into buying something you do not need.

One thing to keep in mind is that any good pet store that is truly pet friendly will give you a discount on your supplies if your pet is a rescue. They do this to decrease the number of animals that need to be put down at a shelter. Some stores have been known to give certain items for free or give up to eighty percent off all of your costs.

You may feel the urge to buy all the items a pet may need in its lifetime all in one go. People do the same thing with new babies. Keep in mind that you have no idea what this animal’s personality is like or what they might prefer. Oddly enough, many animals tend to like playing in inexpensive items like cardboard boxes.

It can be really irritating for owners who have spent a great deal on toys, so just take it easy and focus more on the animal’s safety and health. This is the most expensive part of getting a pet, anyway, so your attention should be put more here as it is. You need the best filtration systems for fish, good leashes and collars for dogs, scratching posts and litter boxes for cats, and registration and I. D. For any animal that could potentially escape the house.

You should also buy things that can help you train your animal. You need good litter boxes or a kennel–and most certainly you need baby gates to keep the animal from going in rooms you don’t want. Training needs to be done early, so buy these things before you even get the animal to ensure there are no complications.

With a new animal in your house, you will probably be feeding it something different than the previous care taker. Ask what the pet had been eating before you got it. Try to feed it the exact same thing–brand and flavor, if applicable–in order to keep your animal’s digestive system running.

If you wish the pet to start eating something else, mix a little of the new food in with the old. Eventually you can start increasing the ratio of new to old until the animal is only eating new food. A lot of people do this anyway for more expensive foods that are healthier. They mix it with cheaper stuff to make it last longer.

Never feed them human food. It is bad for them. Stick to water, too. Do not give cats milk, despite the rumor that they like it. Just because an animal CAN eat human food, and may even beg for it, does not mean that they understand their health. Chocolate is especially dangerous for animals, but this will not stop them from wanting whatever it is you are eating.

Train Your Dog At Home

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Before obedience classes were popular, or even available, nearly every dog owner in the past relied on home dog training to get their dog to obey and perform tricks.

Dog owners really had no choice but to spend time teaching Fido at home if they wanted a well behaved dog. They had to have the patience, willpower, and desire to do so. Many people learned how to train their dogs from their parents who had owned dogs. Some read dog training books to learn how to do it.

Even though there is many dog obedience classes now which you can choose from, you can still accomplish home dog training just as your parents did. This is a good option if you do not have the budget to bring your dog to expensive obedience classes.

Dogs are easy to train. You just need to use a mixture of consistency, praise, and treats. Give them enough of those, and they’ll be doing whatever you want in no time. They will obey you and perform nice tricks to impress your friends.

One of the best method to train your dog is to model the behavior you want from him. For example, if you want him to sit on command, then gently place him in a sitting position while saying ’sit’ in a firm tone.Remember to look into your dog’s eyes too while conducting this training.

Keep repeating this. Soon, you only need to say ’sit’ and you will see him do that. When he does it correctly, give him a treat and praise your dog. If your dog did not do it correct, continue to model the sitting position and the command. Your dog will get it eventually.

Some dogs catch on more quickly than others, so have some patience if it takes a while with yours. He will get it eventually.

Be sure to keep praising and giving treats for the first several times your dog does the right thing on command. This is important. After a while, you can forego the treats but continue to praise your dog. Your dog need to know whether are you happy with him.

Review On Kingdom Of Pets

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

One of the best dog training programs that is currently available online today is the high aclaimed Kingdom of Pets dog training guides. It is one of the most downloaded guide.

I can proudly say that I have learned so much more from this guide than the many books that I have even bought on dog training. The creator of this guide has taken extra care to ensure it is totally complete and nothing is left out. I am sure you will be impressed with what is inside.

I strongly believe that this guide is one of the best; if not the best dog training programs there are available on the internet.

What are the positive aspect of the kingdom of pet’s dog training programme?

Pros

* Very detailed
* Leaves nothing to be desired
* Lots of tips and tricks

Cons

* No videos

It is quite possibly the most detailed course I have ever encountered and I myself am a dog trainer. For anyone that wants to train their dog this programme is a good starting point. I’m sure you won’t be let down by it.

If you like knowing everything about dog training this course is a good start and a good beginning. Now to say I’m a dog trainer and then rant and rave about another dog training programme is only because I thought it was a very enjoyable read and by the end of reading I had nothing more to desire of reading.

I’m sure you’ve heard lots about dog training before but with this course as already mentioned there is little left out if anything at all. I can assure you that it’s a very enjoyable read and would be happy for another person to know exactly what it has to offer. It is inexpensive and it has made much more of an impression than any other program book or course I’ve bought.

Choosing The Perfect Personalized Dog Collar

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

More and more people are trying to get a more individual look for their dog. They don’t want to put on a black leather collar with a nice big shiny name tag, they want something better, they are looking for a personalized dog collar for their best friend.

For instance you could decide to go for a personalized dog collar that is made from leather and have the name of your dog put on the collar in lovely studs, various gems, or diamonte. You could decide to pick a collar made out of webbing with the dogs name printed on it. This type of collar would offer you a choice of both background colors and print color for the name of your dog, so is easily personalized.

The amount of personalization will vary, and it can be as simple as choosing a webbing collar with a nice background, then having your dogs name printed onto this in a contrasting or a matching color, or it can be as fancy as you like.

If you have a female dog then how about a beautiful feminine glitzy collar in pink which can then be set off with gorgeous shiny gems. How proud do you think she would be to walk around wearing a collar like that? For a male dog, you can have his name emblazoned with silver studs. He will look really cool.

If you wanted a slightly simpler design, then you can buy a webbing collar which has a good choice of colors and patterns available. You could then have his or her name printed onto the collar in a suitable color.

Just think how proud you are going to feel when you take your dog out for a walk wearing his nice new personalized dog collar. Think of all the comments you are going to get from other dog owners as well. Having a beautiful personalized dog collar is really going to set your dog apart from all the other dogs you meet in the park, and surely he’s worth it isn’t he?

Getting Your Dog Started on Advanced Obedience Training

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Advanced obedience training-don’t let the name daunt you anyone who is willing to exert patience can do this. It is one of the most fulfilling things you can experience with your pet. Not only will you enjoy the company of the best version of your dog, you will be doing Fido a favor as well. Successfully trained dogs are well-adjusted, confident and mentally quicker. You can leave him alone in a roomful of strangers without worry on him inflicting harm to anyone.

First and foremost in canine training is the establishment of hierarchy between you and your dog. You need to set your position as the leader early on. As soon as the dog understands this, the simpler it will be to train him. Neglecting to do so can spell trouble. There will be a struggle for dominance and aggressive behavior will ensue. Be strong and firm in teaching. When you see the beginnings of the alpha dog coming out, correct it immediately but do not be overly severe and mean to him.

A firm and confident voice will help deliver our commands effectively. While you speak, gently guide him to what exactly you want him to do. In the beginning it will take several attempts before he will understand what you mean; but advanced obedience training will be easier as soon as the dog gets the repetitive commands and their corresponding actions you’ve been using in your training classes.

Rewarding the animal with treats and lots of praise is the best way to teach your dog to obey. This is called Operant Conditioning and it is what he understands. You have to remember to praise him every single time he successfully accomplishes a command. Sometimes, when you forget to applaud him, he will get confused as what is good behavior. Take the extra effort to remember will not be wasted on him.

On the other hand, do not neglect to reprimand the dog for wrong behavior. Do this at the time he is committing the mistake not after so he will know that action is wrong. Chastising the animal will also emphasize right from wrong. For example, if he eats dirt in the street scold him immediately. Right after put dog food in front of him and enthusiastically praise him wen he eats the latter.

Keep dog obedience training sessions short and sweet throughout the day. Keep doing the commands you want him to learn. This will drive the lessons home. Teach him at different times in the day so his obedience is not relegated to only a certain time and place.

People find the stunts that dogs pull in movies amazing. But remember, they all started with the simplest command too. You can start the same and work your way up. Be patient and consistent and you will see your pet advance to trickier commands like fetch, roll over, attack before long. Employ the same principles as outlined in this article and you will succeed in the harder tasks as you did in the basic ones.

There you go, the basic and fundamental tools you will need in advanced obedience training for dogs. There’s nothing left to do now but start training!

Geraldine Dimarco knows that dog obedience training is a necessary tool for all pet owners. Avail of your free information on Advanced Obedience today.
